Wednesday nights in DC

Gordo | Oct 31, 2002 10:19 AM

My bride and I have classes that keep us downtown on Wed nights until 7:30 so we dicided to take advantage of that and plan nice downtown DC dinners. We are in the middle of this six week adventure. Here are some of our results.
Week one..enjoyed tapas at Jaleo. We particularly like the spinach cooked with apples, raisins and pine nuts; sweet peppers stuffed with goat cheese and mushrooms; garlic shrimp and, naturally for desert, flan. Total cost for 2 --well under $100.
Week two .. Mexican night at Andale. Started with spicy chicken soup. Wonderful enchiladas verde for her and carnitas for me. We were too full for desert but plan to go back for that. The desert selection sounded fantastic. The total bill for two, including margaritas and wine --- just under $100.
Week three (last night) a marvelous dinner at Ten Penh. BBQ short ribs followed by "smoked" lobster for me. The lobster was served with fried spinach (which was a very interesting taste). Pork/shrimp dumplings for her followed by curry shrimp. Every bite was wonderful. We were again too full to enjoy dessert but simply had to try the banana fritters with salted peanut ice cream. The peanut flavor was very subtle that it tasted like very good vanilla ice cream to me. Total cost including martini, 3 glasses of wine and the most expensive items on the menu and tip $150.

All three of these places provided excellent service, fantastic food and we felt we really got our money's worth.

Now, we're looking for the next three weeks. As you can tell, we are concentrating on the Pennsylvania Ave area near 7th Street. We're considerint Caucus Room, 701, Signatures, Les Halles??? any other ideas out there?
