Wedding Cake Ideas involving Passion Fruit?

So I was asked by my close friend to do the cake for her wedding. To avoid having to deal with what seems like it could be an architectural nightmare if I do a traditional tiered cake (which I've never done, and the dowels, etc., scare me), we decided we would instead do a series of smaller layer cakes and display them on different cake stands on a long dessert table. Both my friend and I like the idea of doing something nontraditional, and as we were discussing various curds that could be used for filling, she mentioned loving passion fruit in particular. I could just do a standard white cake with passion fruit curd and a buttercream, but wanted to see if people had other ideas for flavor profiles that could go well with or incorporate passion fruit? We've discussed other fruits but passion fruit seems to be the one she always comes back to.

Any suggestions welcome! As long as it's not super labor intensive and can be made in advanced / assembled fairly easily day of.

ETA: My friend has decided we should just stick with a simple white cake and a vanilla frosting, with the only non-traditional touch being in the passion fruit curd. She wants to make sure it's something not too unusual so that everyone will like it. So I guess then my next question is, what are thoughts on the best type of buttercream? I.e. Swiss, French, Italian...I think Swiss is my personal favorite...
