Looking for a watermelon rind pickle recipe

Scott_R | Jun 4, 201705:40 AM     1

I'm trying to replicate for my 86 year old mother a watermelon pickle recipe that her grandmother made, long ago.
Unlike almost all of the recipes I've come across, it didn't use sugar or any other sweetener (not in any significant quantity, at least)--it's not a sweet pickle but more akin to a cucumber sour pickle recipe. Something closer to this,
https://www.kcet.org/food/recipe-ferm...
I.e., flavored with pickling spice, not cinnamon or related spices. However, she says she's certain it's a vinegar-based pickle, not salt fermented.

If I can't find anything specific I'll just use a standard brine, but I was hoping to find something that's already been tuned to work best with watermelon rind.
