Finally paid this place a visit: Wasabi on Queens Blvd between 39th and 40th street, same block as Hemsins.
I was impressed with their veggie tempura batter, which was airy and crispy. Also liked the fact that they used taro, and sweet potato. Even the onion was good(I'm not an onion lover). The tempuras came piping hot, which probably why it was so good.
They have a large and varied menu, including oysters on the shell, and baked clams and baked oysters. I got the baked clams, which were barely cooked, so that the inside is still very tender and briny, and covered with their special Japanese Mayo and spice sauce. My first was too briny, but then I mixed the sauce well and drank the clam from the shell(it was very juicy) and it was delicious. These were large clams, and yet somehow the scallop on the clam comes off pretty easily.
TomMeg got the salmon skin sushi: crisped salmon skin and cucumber. Nice contrast to the creamy rich eel sushi. My order of the special eel roll(can't remember the exact name) is described as "eel on the inside, eel on the outside, for eel lovers" was quite good, and yet the small eel sushi was exquisit on its own.
I definitely prefer this place to Aryoshi, and to the previous Tiger Sushi.
