Checked out Wann Yen today, the shaved ice place that opened last weekend, ran by the people behind Thai Curry Simple. I showed up as the restaurant opened (they actually opened about 10 minutes early since they noticed I was waiting). I had the Lord Chong Bai Tauy (pictured above), which had pandanus leaf noodles along with the coconut syrup and shaved ice. Mine also had bits of water chestnut that had been boiled with tapioca flour (the pink things in the picture). Not sure if that's usually part of the menu item or if they just gave that to me as a freebie, but they were great. Anyways, I thought that the shaved ice was excellent, and the owners were really nice. I'd strongly recommend Wann Yen for people who want to see a part of traditional Thai cuisine that may not be super well known. I don't personally care a whole lot about authenticity, but Wann Yen is making desserts that nobody else, probably in the state, is. It seems like the owners are part of a larger national movement towards more authentic, traditional, and obscure Thai food. I'll definitely be back, and I'd suggest that anyone interested in authentic Thai cuisine go by to check it out.
