Walter's Cafe Portland ME-Old Fave comes through

We don't get down to the big city (Portland) as much as we'd like but found ourselves pleasantly wandering around the Old Port on Sunday afternoon.

In search of an early dinner, we decided to visit an old favorite, Walter's Cafe.

Right at 5pm we had the place to ourselves...but other tables started filling up throughout our meal. Our server was friendly, efficient, and professional. She took pride in the menu offerings and steered me to a wine-by-the glass special which was exactly as she described.

We shared the mussels appetizer. Mussels served with white beans, escarole, and ham/bacon (tasso?) in broth that was very flavorful and great for dipping the fresh foccacia.

DC had the herb crusted rack of lamb. Cooked as requested and raved over.

I had the potato-crusted haddock served with grilled asparagus and "tater tots" on a pumpkin bisque. Again, cooked perfectly and delicious.

The menu is more adventurous than I remember but not overly so. (What I think is the Autumn menu is posted online. The Winter menu is very similar with slight variations.)

Not inexpensive but certainly a good value. (App, two entrees, one glass of wine was $64 plus tax/tip).

A perfectly executed meal and dining experience. With lots of new choices in town I urge you not to forget about this old favorite.
