My wife and I will be dining 4 nights Thursday – Sunday in mid-January and it’s been a couple of years since we’ve visited, so while I may be out of the loop, I hope to enjoy the usual friendly expertise of this board. The only reservation, I mean “tickets’ that we’ve bought so far are for EMP for Friday night, and I’m leaning towards Shopsin’s for Friday breakfast that day. The focus will be on dinners and the other meals will fall into place around those 4 meals, so I’m looking for a balance between the 4 dinners.
One hiccup is that many places I’d like to try are closed Sunday, so I’m thinking of a place like Marea or Del Posto to fit in then, or maybe someplace more lively and casual like two of my favorites, Babbo and Minetta (but not those two as I’d like to try new-to-me places). Is The NoMad too similar to EMP?
In addition to EMP, I’m broadly thinking along the lines of Chef Yamada at Brushstokes, Aquavit, and then our tricky Sunday meal.
Since Ichimura is no longer at Brushstrokes (which I found out today when I called), I am very open to another suggestion, but I do like the traditional aspect that Yamada seems to be going for, at least from the conversation I had with the restaurant. Maybe try for Ko? Jungsik? Any other ideas? Maybe even Le Bernardin if it doesn’t step on EMP’s toes the next night?
Looking towards the Scandi aspect of Aquavit and would like the option of ala carte after two tasting menus, so if there is another similarly spirited spot in Manhattan, it could fit the bill. Or something completely different (and cheaper), who cares really as long as it is memorable. I suppose I could have just titled this post "give me your 4 favorites" and made it shorter!
