Waiter Sitting at Your Table

Happened again last night: When she came by to do her waiterly duties, she sat at a spare chair at our table with us. I assume this happens in restaurants with tight space, so they can get out of the aisle. Or is this related to the "I'm Greg and I'll be your waiter" routine? I wondered what other diners and food service folk think of this informality.
