Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ, El Cerrito (Report)

I've had take-out from this place five or six times now so I feel qualified to recommend it. Probably not better than other plate lunch places, but if you're in the vicinity it's definitely worthwhile. It's across the street from the El Cerrito Plaza mall, in the block just south of Pastime Ace Hardware. Although it was mentioned in the Chron's best cheap food roundup a few weeks ago, it has never been crowded at any of my visits. You can take away or dine on the premises -- IKEA chairs, tacky island wall decorations, but good island music; a good place to come with kids.

The short ribs have been excellent every time except once when they were a little underdone. Deep-fried items such as shrimp and chicken katsu are delicate and crunchy. Chicken cutlet with gravy was wonderful so I imagine that the loco moco would also be good. The mahi-mahi and the teriyaki chicken were okay but nothing special. I like the macaroni salad, but it might be too much sauce for some tastes. I have not tried the saimin, pork lau lau, or the kalua pig (not on the menu, but almost always on special).
