Was watching Bobby Flay (Brunch at Bobby's) about a week ago and he made french toast in his waffle maker. I was intrigued so along with some honey wheat rolls I made for dinner last night I made a loaf of honey wheat bread too.
This AM I cut the bread in thick slices and soaked it my usual french toast batter of eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg. I let the bread soak for several minutes on both sides so it was well soaked. I then cooked the slices in a waffle maker. They took longer than traditional waffles but came out beautifully! Slightly dense but tender center with a wonderful caramelized exterior. I topped mine with Kate's butter and sliced strawberries while my son and husband went whole hog with butter, syrup and powdered sugar.
I made a bunch of extras to add to my freezer stash of grab and go breakfasts. These are a keeper!
