Vuelve a la Vida @ Tacos Colima #1 Truck in Salinas

Melanie Wong | Aug 8, 200711:30 PM

Tacos at night, seafood by day. The Tacos Colima #1 truck has a new seafood alter ego. This is the same truck that dispenses tacos and complimentary nopalitos on East Market and Williams Road in the evening. Recently it re-established a day-time shift selling Colima-style mariscos on Spicer Street on the south side of the street at the corner of Abbot Street.

Spotting it on Tuesday with the sun high in the sky at lunch time, I finally had a chance to take an in-focus shot of the colorful truck.

No meats served on the day shift, only the mariscos on a menu taped over the list of carnes and antojitos.

To keep up rworange’s interest and enthusiam, there was no question in my mind that I had to order the vuelve a la vida ($7.50). Packed to-go with tostadas, my brown paper sack had plastic packets of ketchup and Tapatio hot sauce, two limes cut in half, salt, and a handful of chewy candies. The vuelve a la vida, a type of seafood cocktail, had shrimp ceviche (cured in lime), chunks of surimi, pulpo, cooked shrimp, and three small and very firm oysters. The juices were very mild tasting mostly of cucumber water and no discernable lime. Little onion either with the vegetables being mostly finely chopped cucumber and tomatoes added on top. Squeezing in the limes and adding some of the Tapatio was just the right kick for me.

The truck is open at this location from about 11am to 4:30pm. I neglected to ask days of operation, so be aware this may be Monday through Friday only. With two mariscos trucks in the style of Sinaloa, two representing Jalisco, one selling Nayarit-style, and now Colima as well, the Salinas street vendors cover most of Mexico’s Pacific coastline.
