On the corner of the block where I get my car serviced, Voodoo Love opened last month serving up New Orleans Creole dishes. Having enjoyed the food and drink offerings of the previous occupant of this venue several times while waiting for my auto, I was sad to see it go. But the newcomer has banished that emotion with its delicious food.
My lunch today was Shrimp & Grits, $16, and half-sweet tea, $3. Before ordering, I asked the chef who had poked her head out of the back if they served instant grits. She pulled herself up in mock indignation to reply, "I'm from New Orleans! Nooooo, we're using organic polenta to make our grits." Right answer! And I was even happier when she confirmed that they're cheese grits. The big, firm shrimp are bathed in a complex, piquant gravy, then scattered with chopped scallions.
I'm happy to have this style of food reappear in the City.
