This nondescript strip mall held my attention and was quickly becoming my favorite place in the middle of nowhere. Besides Lai Young dumpling factory https://www.chowhound.com/post/frozen... and Mis Tamales tamaleria https://www.chowhound.com/post/mis-ta..., the third reason to linger here is Volcano Island Chicken, a Korean fried chicken place!

I ordered a small size of with-bone chicken wings with soy-garlic sauce (not wanting to deal with the sticky red stuff in the car). For $12, this turned out to be more ample than expected with four wing flats, four drummettes, slaw, pickled daikon, and white rice. I was advised my food would be ready in ten minutes, so I suspect the wings are parcooked as total frying time would typically be 20 to 25 mins.

Devoured hot on the spot in the car, the very crunchy, medium-thick batter and the fragrant, garlicky and faintly sweet seasoning hits every sensor for tastiness. While the flesh was plenty moist, these wings didn’t have the squirting juiciness of freshly fried chicken. Still very tasty and a place to keep in mind when you don't have 30-minutes to wait around for Korean fried chicken.

And I had my first encounter with a Korean “donut”. The disk was filled with sesame seeds, pinenuts and brown sugar and the outside had a thin sweet glaze. However, though served hot, it too seemed like it had been parcooked and then refried.

Volcano Island Chicken delivers a lot of flavor and efficiency for the dining dollar. It's worth checking out when in the neighborhood.
