Vivande Porta Via, SF

Last week I took a walk down Fillmore after an appointment and finally had a chance to try Tango Gelato for the first time – lovely.

Also stopped by Vivande Porta Via and realized I hadn’t darkened this door for quite a while. It had been a favorite haunt for me years ago. I picked up a half roast chicken with garlic and rosemary, $4.50, and one eggplant sandwich ($1.10 or $14/lb.). The chicken was not as garlicky as some, but the scent of the rosemary was far more floral and evocative instead of turpene-ish. The meat was juicy and not dried out – better than most. I’ve made the eggplant sandwich myself from the recipe in Carlo Middione’s cookbook, and it was fun to see how his own kitchen executes it. I thought it was greasier than my own.

Vivande doesn’t get much attention or detailed reporting on this board, either for take-out or eating in. I’m wondering how folks feel about it these days?
