Tonight, we finally took the suggestion (some months ago)of some Chowfolks re where to get a good burger in Oakland besides Luka's. The suggestion was Garibaldi's on College. We'd never been there before. It's really big and pretty swell looking. We looked like a couple of wet rats with water dripping from our coats. We got there at about 6 and the place was empty. When we left it was almost full.
We both ordered the burger and fries (from the bar menu only although we ate at a table). The burger was marvelous! And big! Juicy on the inside, slightly charred on the outside. Lots of flavor (why can't I make burgers like these at home - I've tried grinding my own, mixing lean and fat meat, etc. etc. but they're never as good as this burger and the one at Luka's.
Burger comes on focaccia with thinly sliced red onions ($1 each for extras like carmelized onions, cheese, etc. which we skipped). The fries were crispy and hot. But it was the taste of the burger that got us. We both looked up at the same time and said "This is REALLY good." We had coffee with our burgers because it was too cold and wet for anything else and I can only drink a bit of wine once every week or so (sounds of muffles sobbing heard in background here).
The only gripe we had was the plates. The burger and fries come on large rectangular plates that take up almost the whole tiny table. We had to move everything around to get them to fit. The waitress had to take away our water glasses to make room.
I have no idea what the rest of the food is like at Garibaldi's and I probably never will. Could never think of ordering anything other than a burger. Maybe next time we'll split one and get some soup or salad or something.
So thanks to those who gave us this rec. There was another rec of a place further along on College, but couldn't find my note about it.
