It's great to go into a restaurant with a list of proven recommendations straight from the Chicago chowhounds. While my wife would rather make up her own mind, I'm going with the tried and true recommendations!
Thanks to stir-the-pot's recommendations (link below), Friday night my wife and I enjoyed a nice dinner at Chez Joel. All of the starter and entree recommendations were spot on, including the French onion soup, Coq au Vin and Steak Frites au Poivre. And those pom frittes are definitely a "super-sized haystack" to be reckoned with.
As for dessert, it's quite possible that the pastry chef is on vacation. Both the Night & Day" cake and the blueberry clafoutis tarte were flavorless. We joked that they were taken out of a frozen Sara Lee dessert box.
Service was also strong. All in all, with the exception of dessert it was an enjoyable visit and we look forward to returning soon.
This week, I'll be visiting Kiki's Bistro for a work dinner. If anybody has some menu recommendations, please send them along...
