My husband and I recently enjoyed another visit to the lovely city of SF, and we spent a good amount of time enjoying some of the city's most notable restaurants. Here is a summary of the good, bad and ugly:
Asia SF - food was very good, try the Asia-Dilla quesadilla, the show was great as well. Go in a larger party, since we got the feeling the waitresses cater to them more.
Il Fornaio - disappointing. We had been there before for breakfast, and upon our return we were dissatisfied with both the service and the food. We were seated next to an area where CONSTRUCTION WORK was being done on the ceiling. Very noisy and distracting. My breakfast crespelle/pancake was supposed to arrive with a variety of seasonal fruit, and it came with only strawberries. Again, very disappointing.
Jardiniere - disappointing. We were really looking forward to dining here, especially after all of the rave reviews. My potato and fennel soup arrived so hot that it burned my mouth (actually causing a small blister on my lip), the waiter was unbelievably pretentious (acting as if we should be soooo grateful to be dining there), and the food was not what we expected for those prices. Also, the waiter recommended a dessert that could feed 4 (the plate with several treats - I forget the name), after giving us the impression that it would be enough for one. Don't bother with Jardiniere.
Campton Place (for breakfast) - this is what food and service should be. The staff was wonderful and the setting is perfect for anytime of the day. Try the french toast or the goat cheese omelet. The tea selection is good as well.
Gary Danko - excellent and definitely the perfect setting for a special occasion. Five courses are a lot, so be forewarned. The salmon is perfect, and the souffle for dessert is a nice ending. This was the only restaurant that accomodated our wish for a romantic table. Those little things make a big difference in a nice night out. Also, put yourselves in the hands of your waiter or the sommelier for wine suggestions!
Farallon - with the exception of getting the worst table in the place (upstairs next to the service area!), we thought the food was everything you would hope it to be! The melon salad is great, and you cannot go wrong with any of the entrees. The service was great as well - we did not feel rushed at all.
Boulevard - again, the fact that the restaurant only sets aside the middle strip for parties of two (as far as we know) is disappointing. So go in a larger party to enjoy the beautiful decor. The foie gras and the filet are wonderful. Great food and ambience though.
BRIX - great food and enormous portions. Great for lunch. Service was nice as well. The staff was excellent and very friendly and the food was delightful.
The Ganges - we liked this little place for it's samosas and desserts. The hostess was more than helpful in calling us a cab, and then updating us on it's arrival time.
Zuni - always great. Love the burger and the soups.
Doidge's - very friendly and enormous mouth-watering portions. Everything is great there!
That's it! :)
