My visit to Olé! Tapas Bar, Studio City

SpongeBobSquarePegs | Feb 27, 200512:43 AM

I am always reluctant to visit a restaurant during it's first 3 months of opening, but a review from hound carter (someone I often agree with and trust)prompted me to want to try it (and it is just a few blocks away).

I absolutely could not stand it's previous incarnation as Tournesol, so I was additionally reluctant, but I'd never had tapas before, my folks were in the area and I made a reservation for 7pm Saturday night.

When we arrived the place was packed. Pretty good for a restaurant that hasn't really "officially" opened (their grand opening is on Thursday if anyone is interested).

We stuck with the tapas, but the entrees looked nice and since it is so close to the house, I am sure we will be back.

Here's what we had from most favorite to least:

Filete Asado - $8
(Grilled Rosemary Flat Iron Steak w/anchovy butter)

Queso de Cabra Frito con Miel - $6
Fried goat cheese with honey

Camaron con Ajo - $8
Sauteed Shrimp w/garlic

Verde Sido Ensalada - 6
Haricot vert salad w/figs & walnut vin

Tortilla Española - $6
Traditional baked omelette

Calamar Vasco - $9
Fried Calamari w/chili garlic sauce

Anguila y Piña Asadas - $9
Grilled eel and pineapple

There was nothing that made me go "OH WOW, I WANT MORE OF THIS", everything was good except for the eel & pineapple dish which was tasty but the portion was insultingly small. While we found the other portions were good value for the price.

Of course, the two things we saw on the menu on the website that got us excited to go (Sopa de la Castaña - Chestnut soup with apples and Bunuelos Anaranjados de la Flor - Orange blossom beignets), they were out of.

The service was extremely friendly from hostess, waitress to bus persons. I liked what they have done with the place, it looks nothing like it's former overly yellow theme (although they did retain some sunflowers for good measure).

While it was enjoyable, nothing really bowled me over. I wouldn't go out of my way to go there, but since it's within walking distance for us, I suspect we will be back to try some of the entrees and the items they were out of tonight.
