Thanks to all who gave me suggestions a few weeks ago for our trip to NYC. We just returned and I wanted to give yoou our thoughts.
Wednesday night at Union Square Cafe was great -- loved the atmosphere, attentive service but not hovering, excellent food and wine. I had a pan-roasted Maine shrimp appetizer followed by the lemon pepper duck. Husband had tuna tartare and the roast suckling pig.
Thursday night was our blow out dinner at Daniel. I was a bit concerned that it might be too stuffy and old school. Not at all. Exquisite service and they made us feel like old friends. We did the five course tasting menu with wine pairing. I thought I had died and gone to heaven. I actually had dreams about the meal that night and we're still talking about it. At the end of the meal, our servers gave us a tour of the kitchen which was the final icing on the cake! We're already planning on going back.
Friday evening we went to Craftbar which was a disappointment. Thre are better places in NYC for the same price. While the food was good, it didn't take our breath away. The fact that we were seated next to a four top with a woman whose extremely loud and shrill voice that could pierce steel didn't help. And then the service . . . A surly guy walked up after a ten minute wait and said "What do you want to eat and drink?" That's it. The wrong appetizers were delivered but the busboy (who was charming) had to sort out that difficulty because the waiter was off sulking someplace. The waiter never checked with us during the meal but did arrive to ask if we wanted dessert. We said no and beat a hasty retreat - god forbid that we actually ask him to do his job and pretend he was enjoying it. And, Mr. Waiter, if you're reading this, yes, we gave you only a 15% tip and felt overly generous doing so. We gave the team at Daniel 30% (which was more than the entire bill at Craftbar). Try smiling sometime and see what it gets you.
All in all, we're terribly envious of all of you hounds who get to enjoy the bounty in NYC. We're coming back!
