Virginia's Restaurant - Carteret, NJ

Having gone by several times and not seeing a soul in the place, I decided to try it. In my experience, the places that have no customers in the dining room are either horrible, or the next best thing since sliced bread. Luckily for me, it was the later. My fiancee and I dined here last night and where very pleased with our meal. We will return again!\

Its a small quaint place with cloth table cloths and napkins, appears like its truly family run, and they serve simple southern style cuisine. There was "modern" jazz type music playing, and its a really nice place.

Having ate a big lunch, we skipped the appetizer, and went direct to the entrees. I chose the "special" smothered pork chops, and my fiancee had the chicken and waffles.

While we where waiting, we had the complementary corn bread and butter. which was very good.

The pork was tender, juicy, and the portions where nice. Two nice sized bone-in chops, covered in a brown onion gravy, which was salty, but not too much, and very good and robust. For my 3 sides (included with every entree), I had rice with gravy, corn, and macaroni and cheese. All where very good, and they where homemade. Everything was fresh, and I could barely finish the plate.

My finance's chicken was nicely prepared too.. the skin was crispy and seasoned nicely! I could eat a bucket of the skin alone. Served atop three miniature waffles which where delicate and hot. She finished off the waffles first. She had the mac and cheese, the candied yams (which where recommended to complement the waffles), and I cant remember the third actually.

I was a little disappointed that they did not have any more banana pudding for desert, but we shared a huge piece of peach cobbler, which we where able to force down after eating our huge entrees. It was nice and warm and tasted fresh and homemade.

I remember a post here saying Carteret is devoid of anything better than burger express (I actually like the station above it btw :-P ) so here is at least one place which is much better!

Our two entrees, sodas, and desert came out to $35 including a pretty healthy tip.

It's simple southern cuisine with family charm, and the food is good, and affordable! What more can you ask for?
