I hadn't been to Violet in over a year but when three of us made a last minute decision to celebrate the SO's B-day, this was pretty much the only option as far as reservations were concerned. (That, and we didn't want to drive that far) Never fear, he is being treated to Ortolan tonight for the real celebration.
The standouts were the beet salad with goat cheese, the short ribs with root vegetables, polenta with caramelized onions, and the baked mac and cheese. The lamb sugo was a bit gamey and could have used more cheese. We ordered the creme brulee and lime tart to share for dessert and were treated to cookies and milk when the check came.
Overall, a good solid meal and a lot of fun- this restaurant reminded me of the Bay Area with its graffiti-like art on the walls and dedication to quality ingredients. That, and it didn't cost us a fortune to have a great meal! (The staff even had a bit of the Bay Area attitude) I'll definitely be coming back.
