Vintage Garden Dining Room - Authentic Chiu Chow Cuisine

Charles Yu | Nov 17, 201807:55 PM

Talk about hidden gem! This authentic Chiu Chow cuisine dining establishment, located at Steeles and McNicoll, is tugged inside the ground floor of a senior retirement home....of all places!

Run by an award winning chef with 40 years cooking experience under his belt, this 'restaurant' offers a whole slue of Chiu Chow cuisine dining options ranging from Omakase 'trust the chef' style based on a specified price per person, to prix fix banquet style menu to a la carte options.

Tonight, our party of 6 opted for ordering a la carte from the menu. Dishes were authentic and well executed. Stand out include the uber-delicious, iconic Chiu Chow soup ' Pig's stomach with preserved mustard green and peppercorn ' ; Sauteed chicken with Sichuan peppercorn and fried spinach leaves condiments; Fried Oyster Omelette pancake; Stirred fry string beans and black fungus with preserved Chinese olive teppenade.....etc. Slight miss included a tasty but under-seasoned herbed-soya marianted duck and tofu plus a lack-of-wok-hay Sauteed Chinese Kale (Gai-Lan) with sun-dried bonito pieces.

Based on price point, friendly service and quality of food, this establishment should be on everyone's ' Chinese cuisine ' list.
