Off Vine - PK's Review

PoetKitty | Dec 8, 200512:54 PM

This has been on the Must Eat Here list for quite awhile, the unique little Off Vine locale, so when an offer from a client came to have lunch here, I fell into a giddy little spiral. Free lunch at a Chow spot!

Place: Off Vine, Tuesday, 12/6 - 12:30 PM
Myself + 1 guest

Ratings in brief:

Ambiance - A-
It's in a craftsman house, which is so homey, unique, warm and gorgeous. Love this change up on the atmosphere.
Service - B-
He was spot-on in the onset, but rather forgot about us as the lunch progressed - booooo.
Food (Taste) - B
I only sampled two dishes, to be fair, and both were GOOD.
Food (Presentation) - B-
No extra snaps here to report.
Wine/Drinks - B-
I didn't sample the wine but eyeballed the list, and it wasn't half bad!
Value - B
Very reasonable.
Overall Experience - B
I really really liked it. Which warrants a return visit but not a love letter.

Off Vine is located at 6263 Leland Way, just (shockingly) off Vine and south of Sunset. It's nestled in a classic Craftsman, painted a cheery yellow on the outside and full of cozy homey decorations and stunning hardwoods on the inside. It's like dining at grandma's place, if your grandma kept a good sense of style and never succumbed to paisly nightmares. Fantastic eye feast.

Nothing special here - just plain french slices and a a seeded loaf, with olive oil/parsley/garlic for dips.

Good wine list, but we just sipped sodas and tea. Didn't want to get wasted at lunch with a client. Well, I mean, I DID - but wisdom prevailed.

I had the Off Vine salad with Blacked Salmon.
Mixed greens, pecans, blue cheese (very good quality) balsalmic, and five large, very seasoned pieces of perfectly cooked salmon. A damn near perfect lunchee salad.
Companion had a magnificent seafood platter - not fried, but served with a puff pastry and a creamy, pot-pie like sauce. Decadent and very fresh.

They are famous for their souffles, and I saw one whiz by and can guess why - they look divine, but no indulgement for me. Next time for sure.

Great space, decent value - Off Vine is unique enough to warrant a repeat or two. I was a happy luncher.

Ciao, 'Hounds!
