Off Vine -- eh...

Went to Off Vine before Mamma Mia last night, a paint-by-numbers script worthy of a totalitarian state's in-house playwright ("I was much happier on this Greek island than I would have been in that depressing housing project"). Stick with the greatest hits CD.

Anyway...had enjoyed Off Vine a few times in the past but always wondered how much of that was due to its being out of the way and the feeling of knowing about a special little place. Now I've convinced myself that's most of the appeal.

The setting is lovely on a nice warm spring day like yesterday, and the place was packed with the pre-theater crowd, about half of whom had ordered bottles of wine.

I ordered the special macadamia-crusted seared tuna with a mango-papaya chutney, my friend the special salmon in a raspberry Capbernet sauce. With each dish came green beans, a carrot puree, and a yummy broccoli "souffle." I enjoyed my tuna quite a bit, thought less of the salmon, but found both plates insufficiently hot and sent mine back for reheating. The food is decent but not really special.

We had put in for the Grand Marnier souffle, which was yummy but not off the charts. Service was friendly and helpful. One glass of wine, one diet Coke. $62 before tip. No rush to return.
