village yogurt

heard about this place for a long time, despite it's very not sexy decor on the outside and inside, one of the best places around for a quick vegetarian/vegan/healthful meal. located on 6th ave, just north of 14th street on the west side of the street, you'll find this up the block from a mcdonald's I think, and a cheesesteak factory. behind the counter, the very cheerful korean proprietor enthused over his recs. for me: veggie burger sandwich, and a carrot, celery, beet and ginger juice. the juice he prepared out of a bad-ass juicer and the resulting elixir was very gingery, very healthy-tasting and made me feel like all the toxins in my body were getting they ass kicked. the veggie burger, while not looking particularly homemade (they do bake a lot of stuff themselves) was really juicy and topped w/ a whole mess of fresh veg (sprouts, cukes, tomato, lettuce, etc.) inside the whole wheat pita. I was really satisfied, and all the food prepared felt really fresh and delicious. they also have a bunch of vegan dessert bars and the "vegan square" I got to go was a barely-baked amalgam of fresh fruit and all manner of whole grains. their mainstay I believe are their steamed dumplings which come over salads, on platters and of course, they also have some natural yogurt (pre-pinkberry). plenty of takeout orders while I ate in; check the place out if you need a health fix in that horrible dining area of 14th st. and 6th ave.
