We tried the Village Grill in Tappan NY last night for dinner. I wasn't too hungry since I had a huge lunch at the Mercer Kitchen...(see NY board for comments). The menu has a heavy Middle Eastern influence. We ordered the Mediterranean combo plate, it had hummus, baba ganoush, taboulli (sp?), cucumber yogurt dip and 4 falafel balls, it was $12.50. Everything on it was fresh and tasty, but the falafel was a bit dry. I did comment to my husband that while this was very good, I enjoyed my usual taboulli, hummus, falafel combo sandwich at Mamouns on MacDougal St. more, and that was only 4 bucks. I also had the lentil soup with orzo, that was very good. Sometimes lentils have too much of an earthy taste for me, but this soup had a good smooth rounded taste. My husband ordered the grilled vegetable on Israeli cous cous. This was good, the vegetables were nice and charred, but there wasn't enough cous cous. For dessert we had the baklava, it's served warm. This too was good, not overly sweet with gobs of honey, the pastry was moist but still flaky. The next time I go back I want to try the rack of lamb. It looked really good, as did the salmon and shrimp over basmati rice.
