These are the words I have to use to describe our visit to Village Coffee Company in Maplewood. We stopped in for lunch ( I had stopped in about a year ago and had a nice sandwich) as we were in the neighborhood.
My companion ordered a turkey sandwich with swiss, lettuce and tomato, and a bowl of Tomato Tortellini. I ordered a bowl of New England clam chowder, and a turkey and brie sandwich with NO tomato. We both asked for plain iced teas.
First, the iced tea: There was something WRONG with the ice cubes. They were, for lack of a better word, "milky". I know that ice can and usually is opaque. But these were mostly crystal clear, and swirls of solid white in them. When asked about this, the waiter made a flippant remark "must be the chlorine"... YUM.
My sandwich arrived with extra tomato (gee, so much for no tomato). My companions turkey was thick and greasy, it appeared to be a "turkey roll" or some sort of processed lunch meat. VERY unappealing.
And the piece de resistance.. my New England Clam Chowder: well... it was actually the opaque color of ice cubes... a milky, thin disgusting paste color. It was mostly water, (similar to when you stir cornstarch into water and then let it sit for a long while) and when I stirred it there was a thick lump of what appeared to be starch and potatoes. It smelled awful and looked worse.
At this point, we both got up from the table and walked out the door, not eating a bite or paying for the slop.
Oh well.. we'll have to hit Jocelyns for a real meal one evening to make up for it.
