We had dinner at Villa Cantina Saturday night. A relatively new place in the Village near the meat market. They are serving, for lack of a better word, Gringo Mexican food. Meaning, what you might expect in a place in the 60’s with the red naugahyde booths. Tacos loaded with lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. Enchilada, chilie rellanos,… That aside, they are doing a really good job of it. The Mrs had a carnitas taco and a chilie relleno ala carte. The carnitas were good and she indicated she enjoyed the taco. The chilie relleno was a large passila chilie, stuffed with cheese, battered and fried. This was probably the best dish of the evening. I was tired and at a loss so I ordered the Jefe burrito with chilie Colorado. It’s a kitchen sink burrito with your choice of meat, rice, beans, avocado, sauce… It is also big enough to feed two people. The chilie Colorado was quite good and had that nice deep smokey flavor. It’s a place I’d go back to, but probably order ala carte as the Mrs did. It’s also a good addition to the Village.
