Viko's is now open, and it is GREAT!

The girlfriend and I went to Viko's new restaurant in Corona tonight, and it was absolutely wonderful.

While Corona may seem like a schlep, it's really not, maybe 10 minutes by subway away from La Flor in Woodside.

We walked in, and a live mariachi band was playing - i don't know if this will be regular or because it was the grand opening saturday night, but it gave the place a really nice vibe - decor, btw, is similar to La Flor.

anyway, onto the food -

while waiting for our food, we were served some grilled cornbread, and an avocado/cumin butter that was simply to die for. i mean, i wanted to eat the stuff with a spoon when my bread was done.

the girl had the Spicy Crab Cake appetizer, and loved it. i tasted some, and felt the same way. it was indeed spicy, but just the perfect amount.

my appetizer was the Cactus Salad - outstanding. Cactus is one of those things where either you love it, or you don't. i happen to love it. the way the cactus, radish, (and what i think was jicima) combined was just amazing. add a slight citrusy vinegrette, and it was to die for.

for the main course, she had the Oven Baked Jumbo Shrimp stuffed with Crabmeat, while I had the Grilled Skirt Steak.

again, both were outstanding.

The shrimp was large and the stuffing was plentiful, and the entire dish seemed to have a slight citrus flavor again - i felt it was a mango-jalapeno sort of thing, but we never did get around to asking Viko, as we just raved about his food.

my steak was delicious. the demi-glaze was slightly sweet, and made the dish perfect.

we were so stuffed we decided not to eat dessert, but we were served a piece each of some Tres Leches cake, so who were we to say no?

on a related note, Viko seemed a bit distressed that there were not a lot of people in the place, and was second guessing himself on the location. the girl pointed out that it was still relatively early (we probably sat down before 6), and i mentioned that the location was fine, and people would indeed make the trek out there.

so don't make a liar out of me! ;o)

seriously though, the food is worth the trip. strongly reccomend it.
