I went to lunch today at Pho 99 at Victory and Sepulveda. I was alone and seated at a table for 4. When I ordered the Beef 7 Ways they moved me to a table for 6 (my first clue). I was brought the coolest gadget that kept the rice noodle wrappers separated with about 10 wrappers in it. A plate of raw thin sliced beef. A marinated salad of carrot, and some crunchy white veggie with some strips of meat in it. A plate of fresh mint, bean sprouts and lettuce leaves, a dipping sauce and another plate of raw sticks of carrot, same white crunch veggie and cucumber. I cooked the meat for a few seconds, put it in the rice wrappers added the marinated salad, sprouts, mint, wrapped it up and then put that in a lettuce leaf and dipped it and ate it. Pretty wonderful. I made about 5 of these. They brought out a plate of different preparations of beef balls. The light colored one in the middle with the rice noodle threads was excellent and one wrapped in what seemed like fried Basil leaves was also good. The other 2 types were not very good. Last was a gruel type soup with brown flakes on top of it. The flakes looked like bacon, tasted like fish. I was totally full and finished about a third of the food but for $16.00 it was quite an adventure. Can anyone shed some light on what I ate and if I did it right. Thanks.
