I had two nice foodie experiences in 24 hours and wanted to share them.
First, we went to Vietnamese Garden on Polk/Geary last night. The chef is ex-Slanted Door so we were pretty excited to try the food. It lived up to my expectations: green beans in a very spicy sauce and a sublime catfish in claypot. On the other hand, the food was pretty expensive ($10.25 for the catfish) and portions were small. I'm used to Vietnamese food that's criminally cheap and served by the bucket, so I guess I'm pretty spoiled. But if you want Slanted Door-type food without the lines I'd give this one a try.
Second, I got up early this morning and was feeling zippy, so my husband and I went to Red's Java House on the Embarcadero. We paid $7 total for our breakfasts. Two wonderful pancakes for me, an egg enchilada for him and coffee for both of us. Good coffee, good eats, good clientele of dockworkers and an incredible view. Whoo!
