Viet Namese Pickles - what did I buy????

Scribbler | Sep 6, 2002 09:54 AM

Stopped at V&T in Hempstead yesterday, and I always have to buy some pickles in the Viet Namese section. I bought something called "Mayom". They are round little things with a small hard pit in the center. The color is pale yellow, but I think part of that may be from spice in the pickling medium. I taste a hint of something citrus. Don't think it's a cherry, because the outside shape is uneven, not smooth. Can anyone tell me what it is? A fruit? Vegetable? Something we don't grow in the US? I found them very pleasant, although the pit was a surprise.
