After much jealous reading of posts here and one failed attempt on a Sunday (didn't know it was closed) I finally made it over to Vientiane Cafe with a fellow Hound and frequent dining companion. WOW! This place is fantastic! Although it has been described as a Laotian menu (there's really only one dish) it is definitely more Thai influenced. However, this is some of the best and most reasonably priced Thai I've had in Philadelphia. We shared two soups - a Shrimp Tom Yum and a Chicken Coconut broth, both of which were perfectly spiced and delicious. Also shared a Crepe appetizer filled with minced shrimp and bean sprouts. For entrees we tried the Chicken in Green Curry and a grilled Salmon with Sweet Basil sauce. The curry dish was served soup-style in a bowl and the salmon was cooked absolutely to perfection. Dried hot pepper spice and minced fresh Thai chiles were provided on the side for extra heat. Everything was absolutely delicious, well seasoned and perfectly cooked. The grand total for this lavish feast was $28.00 before a generous tip. Service was friendly and attentive and the restaurant was quite busy. Will definitely be recommending this and going back with some frequency. I still have to try the noodle dishes! Thanks to everyone for the heads up on this place - a real Chowhound find!
