Vienna: Post-opera dining options

Desidero | Apr 27, 2012 12:35 PM

I'm going to be in Vienna in mid-May for 5 nights and 3 of those nights I will be seeing performances at the Vienna State Opera or the Musikverin. I'm looking for good options for a post-opera bite either near the Staatsoper or in the 7th district, where I'm staying. I'm going to be alone and would like places that have some energy around 10 p.m. In other words, while quality food is a priority, I'd like to avoid overly romantic or sedate restaurants. A younger, hipper vibe would be a plus, but not a necessity.

I have read good things here and elsewhere about the following restaurants in the vicinity of the opera: Gasthaus zur Oper, Zum Finsteren Stern, Figlmüller and Wein & Co. In the 7th district, I've read positive reports about Café-Restaurant Halle, Phoenixhof and Glacis Beisl.

A few questions:

Will all these spots be open after 10 p.m.?

Which of these restaurants fit the description of what I'm looking for (i.e., buzzy, good food, not romantic)?

Besides the restaurants I list above, are there other places that you think would appeal to me?

In New York, where I live, I like to eat at the bar. Is there bar dining in Vienna?

I've seen many of these restaurants described as being places where reservations are required. Are reservations required at all these places as late as 10/10:30 at night?

Is it possible to walk in and get a table/spot at the bar?

Many thanks for any assistance you can provide.
