So, I finally went to Vieng Thai for the first time last night. Of course, I have been a Kanomwan supporter since I moved here...but I wanted to see what all the good reviews were about.
Suffice to say, Kanomwan is still the best Thai food in Houston in my book. It might not be the most "authentic," but VT just didn't give me the same richness and flavor found at Kanomwan. They were also out of a few of the appetizers, so I was a bit disappointed (I really wanted to try the fish cakes).
We ended up getting the Thai chicken wings (ok), the S2 soup (chicken, lemongrass, coconut milk) which was not even close to the S3 served at Kanomwan, the massuman (sp?) curry with beef (good), panang curry with chicken (very good). VT's curries were a bit more "soupy" than Kanomwan's curries-- so I guess that is a matter of personal preference.
Overall, still a very good Thai restaurant, but I still choose Kanomwan over Vieng Thai.
