We ate very well in Venice recently. The food exceeded our expectations (which were not too high.) Fortunately, we caught a few places just before they closed for summer vacation. We also benefitted greatly from reading chowhound advice, particularly from PBSF, so thank you for that! We focused on seafood -- in particular fish and shellfish from the lagoon.
Alle Testiere, Anice Stellato, Vini da Gigio and Ai Artisti were all wonderful restaurants for dinner. We also really enjoyed All'Arco and Cantinone gia Schiavi for cicchetti lunches.
The only disappointing meal was at Local. The cooking was very weak, which surprised us since several of the owners of the restaurants we liked recommended this place. Go figure! The concept here is "modernized" traditional Venetian fare. Although I am more of a traditionalist, I was intruiged. Sadly the food was simply not delicious. The worst dinner and one of the most expensive of our trip (we also went to Friuli and the Dolomites.) It was also frightfully slow. We had to wait an hour between courses.
Estro was just OK. I didn't like the overly-branded ambiance and wouldn't return even though the food was fine.
