My husband and I are year round Venice/Englewood area residents. That means that this is the best month to get out there and check out eating establishments before the cold and pale arrive to get warm and brown. When not getting warm and brown, they eat out and we can't get in. Last week, we ventured to the Lazy Greek Cafe located in the Brickyard Plaza in Venice. We were so happy with our meal, we returned last night. It is a very small (four tables inside/ two out) estabishment. Husband and wife greet you and you get to know them easily. Everything was made to order. They also have a wide range of for puchase items (all from Greece) from salt, to olives to dolmades.
AVGOLEMONO SOUP was excellent. We split what they call a cup and it was plenty for both of us. I had chicken that was in chunks marinated and grilled (can't remember the Greek name), served with tomatoes, English cucumbers, taaramasalata, tzatziki, and pita. It was superb. This week I had the standard gyro and greek salad. Again exceptional.
My husband's Greek food adventure stays with the avgolemono soup. He has had the ham and cheese toast (the Greek term for grilled) and loves it. The meats are Boars Head.
If anyone else has had any new recent experiences with non-chain restaurants, in south Sarasota County, please join the conversation. We figure we have about six weeks before standing room only becomes the norm until the beginning of May.
