Velvet Cantina Report

Lord Griffin | Mar 2, 2006 10:56 PM

In the ongoing quest for yummy mexican chow, i checked out velvet cantina tonight because of some recent posts suggesting them and trumping up their salsa. ive gotta say i was pretty dissapointed.

the restaurant/bar iteself is pretty cozy. they play really good music (sound of silence by simon and garfunkle... electronic remix...sweet) and the service was attentive. those were the high points.

the salsa is very fresh... and utterly bland. i dont think a single chili pepper of any kind went into it. i love spicy. this was anti-spicy.

ive been searching for a great queso dip since i moved here. in florida all the mexican restaurants had a white cheese with some spices dip that was to die for. this cheese dip tasted like something you would get at a tex-mex chain restaurant... ok it tasted slightly better than that, we did finish it i admit.

we had the chicken strips which someone recommended on the board recently. eh. no taste to the chicken and the sauces were ok. one of them i swear was mcdonalds bbq sauce.

the gf and i shared the chicken and avocado enchiladas... once again, just a step above chain mex. beans/rice were bland. i honestly didnt detect a single tiny piece of avocado... which is strange considering the menu description says "with thick slices of avocado"

i really wanted to like it, but alas, it fell short. nothing i had would make me go back except for my curiosity of tequila... but i will probably check out tres agaves first.

total bill came to 40 bucks (with 2 dos equis and a 7 dollar tip)
