Vegetate

KEG | Nov 12, 2005 08:35 AM

I've benefitted from reading more than my fair share of good advice from this board so I wanted to post on a really good experience I had at Vegetate (by the new Convention Center) last night. I'm not a vegetarian by any stretch of the imagination so I didn't have many expectations from a vegetarian place. But, I couldn't believe how good the food was. They did an amazing job of finding flavors that I thought had no right being in a vegetarian dish. Particularly good were the sesame-crusted tofu (which didn't taste like what I thought tofu tasted like), a sweet potato latke (sp?), and the sauteed greens that came with the Tempeh/latke dish (I think they were beet greens). Seriously good food. Really, I was shaking my head at how good it was. Nice touches (like pickled green beans in a glass for starters) and the prices were quite reasonable. My girlfriend had a plate of 4 cheeses for dessert that was enough for 2 people, high quality, and it cost $5. I don't think you can look at those cheeses in Whole Foods for $5. Plus, they did a very nice job converting an old row house into a nice, but small, place and the service was quite good. No wine or beer yet, but apparently they're working on it.
