I had lunch at Vegetarian Wok (529 E Valley Blvd #128, San Gabriel, (626) 288-6069). It was packed. I got the vegetarian intestines with chili from the lunch menu because it was the coolest-sounding dish they had. But a vegetarian dish from the lunch menu didn't sound like enough food, so I also got the vegetarian sausage with basil from the dinner menu. I needn't have worried; either dish with rice would have been enough to hold me all day. So I packed up the vegetarian intestines to go and just ate the vegetarian sausage. I had been hoping that it would be a sausage with vegetables inside, but I guess that would have been called vegetable sausage rather than vegetarian sausage. Instead it was more like rice stick stir-fried with mushrooms, ginger, and lots of fresh basil. It was quite good. I don't think I've ever had a Chinese dish with basil before, or basil combined with ginger. Does anyone know if basil is a longstanding Chinese ingredient, or if (like chilis) they got it from the Europeans?
