Vegetarian Tamales?

As I cook more and more Mexican food, I find that I'd really like to tackle tamales. Unfortunately, as a vegetarian, this might be a pipe dream. Is there any decent substitute for lard in tamales? If I used butter, would the flavor be so wonky that it would throw off the whole recipe?

Any ideas?
