Tuesday, February 5, 2008. We went to see the 9:30pm showing of KA tonight, so we needed a bite to eat afterwards, around midnight. Unfortunately, none of the really interesting restaurants in Vegas seem to be open that late, so we debated between the Peppermill and Firefly, and eventually ended up at Firefly.
My review of Firefly can basically be summed up in two words: don’t bother. It’s a perfectly nice looking restaurant with a typically trendy, dark, bar atmosphere. The tapas menu is quite extensive, but fairly pedestrian. We chose the Firefly fries, “fishsticks,” chicken and chorizo stuffed mushrooms and bacon-wrapped dates, expecting to need to order a few more things to fill up. However, as usual, the Vegas-sized portions were about double the size of NYC tapas and the 4 items we ordered were plenty. Besides, after tasting them, I had no desire to plumb the menu further. The fries were okay - a bit soggy, but otherwise fine. However, they were topped with a cheese that was supposed to be parmigiano but tasted like someone had shredded the compressed contents of a can of Kraft grated romano left it in the sun for a year - dry and greasy all at once. The accompanying "aioli" didn't taste like garlic OR mayonnaise - completely flavorless. They'd have been better off with Hellman's. The “fishsticks” were actually closer to filet size, and they were not bad – very crispy (panko coating) and served with a slightly spicy tartar sauce. The stuffed mushrooms were pretty terrible – the filling tasted like dry leftover chicken and they were covered with the same awful cheese as the fries. The dates (which the server informed me are their best seller) were sitting in a pool of some unidentifiable thick sauce with chunks of the worst blue cheese I’ve ever had.
Anyway, given that only 1 out of 4 choices was remotely palatable, I would NOT recommend this place unless you have no other option. I wish we’d gone back to Jack in the Box for more tacos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
