After learning he has a dangerously high cholesteral level, my husband decided to become, as he put it, an "instant vegan". He has observed a strict vegan diet for the past three weeks, which is amazing considering that his favorite foods up to now have been cheese, eggs, and big rare steaks!
This seriously limits our eating-out options. So far, we've eaten at two vegan-friendly places near our home in OC:
--Woodlands in Artesia: Very tasty Indian vegetarian--we tried to avoid the dishes with yogurt and the Instant Vegan had to pass on all their creamy dessearts.
-- Native Foods in Costa Mesa: This is a purely vegan restaurant--and the food was much better than I expected. The dishes we ordered (a barbequed "chicken" pizza and a tempeh-based hamburger) were attractively presented and nicely flavored. The burger in particular was cleverly done--it had a teriyaki-like glaze and was grilled until smoky and slightly crisp at the edges, which made both the flavor and texture a bit more "meaty." It was obviously not real meat, but still tasty on its own terms.
So, do any of you know of other tasty, vegan-friendly options in the Costa Mesa/Irvine area? We'd be grateful for your suggestions!
