Why vanilla is so expensive in the USA

JoeDeLima | Apr 3, 201510:43 AM

My wife is from Colombia and recently came from visiting family there. She brought back with her vanilla extract produced by L'meson in Medellin. This is absolutely the best vanilla I have ever had. It comes in a glass bottle without using alcohol to extract the vanilla flavor (so the taste is not spoiled from what others supply in plastic bottles). The bottle contents are 180 CC, (about 6 oz) which is significantly more that what is available here in glass bottles. The price there is about $5.00US and larger bottles are available to reduce the price.

Unfortunately an Internet search has not discovered ANY vanilla from Colombia. Over time I've discovered that the US Government has restricted the sale of vanilla with import taxes, supposedly to provide support to workers in Mexico that farm the vanilla beans.

Apparently there is no such restriction on drugs from Colombia when the government here sells illicit drugs from Colombia on American streets to fund its war making.
