This holiday season I plan on giving homemade vanilla extract to my family. I've searched and searched and come up with several different vendors with different varieties of beans.
While they mostly fall into geographical categories, as listed in the title of this message, they also fall into different botanical categories, most notably V. tahitensis and V. planifolia (which apparently also goes under the pseudonym V. fragrans). Having grown orchids for a number of years, I can well imagine that particular cultivars of each vanilla exist as well, each with flavor characteristics unique to it.
Sooo, my questions are 1. Does anyone know if the cheaper vanillas (Ugandan, Australian) are as good as the rest? and 2. What is the best vanilla available?
Thanks for your input. :-)
