This is for Bronwyn, who will be Amtrak-ing up to SB for lunch, then back down to LA for Valentine's Day.
Any Santa Barbara hounds have suggestions for a nice lunch?
As a former resident, a couple of recs of my own for Bronwyn
LA SUPERICA---This seems to be a love it or hate it place among locals. More love it than hate it, and I am in the former camp. Delicious, homemade Mexican food, super authentic, except for the prices, which are a tad high. Super-informal taco-stand-type place, so if you want something more "special", look elsewhere. Second favorite restaurant in SB (see below for numero uno)
PAPAGALLOS---Nice Peruvian joint tucked away behind State Street. Although not strictly a Peruvian dish, they make a good paella there. Excellent sangria too.
THE PALACE---my very favorite restaurant in SB (I have been known to make the drive just for the meal). Great Cajun food (Blackened Filet Mignon stuffed with crawfish tails---life doesn't get much better!), even better atmosphere, great service (waiters/waitresses pass out lyric sheets, and the whole restauranmt (including the kitchen, which is open) does a sing-along every half hour or so). This place is a real blast, and the food top-notch.
