My Valentine: Potato Balls from Venice Bakery…

Dommy | Feb 14, 200710:25 AM     5

As many SCARFER’s know my Valentine is a fellow hound. I never expected it, in fact, I used to dread it (I have enough trouble control my houndish impulses to try everything on the menu, let alone going out with someone who encouraged it!). But somehow after a train trip, boat trip and getting attacked by a swarm of bees, here I am. And it’s actually been wonderful, and in a chowhoundish sorta way of course…

Case in point, for the last few months things at work and school have been really tough. One day, I was particularly having a BAD day and he was sadly a victim of it. Still, I made an extra effort to come home for lunch that day (which would be the only time I got to see him due to our wonky schedules. :P) and he told me he had a surprise for me… He took a little box and presented me with… a Potato Ball from Venice Bakery located on Venice near Overland (A few doors down from La Cumagey Market)!!

He had read here on Chowhound how excited I was to have a potato ball place so close, but again (Like lots of other things lately :P), just could NOT find the time to make it over. :( Needless to say it totally made my day! The Portos Potato Balls are one of my favorite snacks, and this one was even BIGGER than those. It also had a bit more ‘flavor’. The potato surrounding the ball is spiced as well as the filling is more like a true picadillo! The shell at portos is a bit more ‘redined’ and crisper, and I think the Portos ones have a bit more meat, but overall, being a carb fiend I think I like this version better. :)

Oh, and also keeping in mind my figure (And his) in mind, he only bought ONE. :)

And so that is why I wanted to write this little valentine today. I feel horribly lucky to have found someone so kind and thoughtful who understands my passion so completely. And how one little carby snack could make me so happy. Not only for the taste, but the exploration. He could have bought a generic box of chocolates, a standard bouquet of flowers, but one little potato ball means so much more… Thanks so much sweetie. Happy Valentines!

And oh, and I should note, I DO love chocolates and flowers, and when he does pick those things up, he does a great job with them too… Whatta guy…. :)
