As some of you may know, finding good Italian in Greenpoint isn't easy. It wasn't until the Voice's Robert Sietsema recommended Valdiano that we decided to check out this unassuming restaurant.
Unfortunately, we tried deliveries first. Not the best way to experience the restaurant. All of the chicken dishes (except chick parm) travel well and are delicious, but the pastas don't.
Recently, we took my brother -- visiting from California and aching for good Italian food -- to Valdiano and were ashamed at what we'd been missing. Antonio the owner is an absolute delight. Friendly and genuine, he loves to make recommendations and when he insisted we try the calamari, boy, were we glad. Tender and fried to perfection.
In addition, the mozzarella in carrozza appetizer, which we tried once via delivery and were unimpressed, took on a whole new meaning when brought directly to our table. Believe me, a deep-fried cheese sandwich *can* taste great. Really great.
As stated, the chicken dishes are wonderful (try the Valdiano -- broccoli rabe and fresh mozz), but the homemade pastas are the real treat. Ask Antonio to chose one for you. You can't go wrong.
