URBAN FORAGE--on Valencia street--Very Good!

sailorbuoys | Jul 16, 200401:39 AM

tonight I went to Urban Forage on Valencia st betw 16/17th street. In fact today a lot of these types of restaurants were briefly reviewed in The Guardian.

I was in a group of 13 people. The total before tip was $175. No alcohol was consumed.

This restaurant replaces The Lunch Club which had a brief run. It specializes in vegan & organic Whole Foods, some raw, some cooked. The menu is huge. Many options are available, especially as far as hot and cold beverages go. I drank something hot called Montezuma's secret that had (to name a few) hemp milk, cocoa, hot chili, almond milk and more. Not a creamy beverage but it grew on me, nice to have the spice in a not so sweet beverage.
I tasted the hot sweet and sour drink with tumeric in it and it was also good.

I ordered an arugula salad and replaced the salad dressing. It had (?) goji berries in it. They are from Siberia and are high in anti-oxidants. (this is what my server told me. they do not have a take-away menu {altho they soon will} so this is all from memory). they look like bright red soft raisins. it said the salad would have baby arugula in it but it looked more like spinach sized leaves. A little disappointing because I was looking for that kick. It came with some kind of scoop of guacamole which was nice and the salad needed that fat. I think it was @$8.95 A little pricey for a salad but it was too large to finish.

Food like this is more filling than one would think. Many of the dressings are in a base of cashew nut butter and it is a rich cuisine even wothout the cow butter.

Everyone was pleased with their meal. Someone close to me got a rice bowl with seaweed and daikon and I think i will try this next time.

The desserts were hit or miss. A german chocolate cake that was almost black but did not taste of chocolate (although I could have eaten a bowl of just the gooey filling). A sugar and wheat free brownie was moist and scented with coconut. An ice cream with (?) stevia, vanilla seeds, cashew milk was the best of everything I tasted. This was nice when served with warm chocolate sauce. I saw that they have a soft serve machine and it does a nice job with this concoction. it was smooth, creamy, not too sweet and had a nice flavour buiding in the mouth. an apple "blossom" was doughy and tasted of flour. the apples and their acid came through but it is July for goodness sake! I was extremely surprised to have no seasonal fresh fruit dessert options. There were also some raw dessert balls but I am not that brave.

They have warmed up the room considerably with funky tables and chairs and loads of real plants. The crowd is that nuevo hippy punky DIY queerish crowd but everyone was friendly and I saw/felt no attitude.

On their card it says they offer weekend brunch. This is their second of three locations.
I highly reccomend this place.
