Upstairs on the Square - dinner report

I took my boyfriend to Upstairs on the Square's Monday Club last Friday night for a celebration dinner. I've heard they have a new chef working, so I was looking forward to trying the updated menu. We started with cocktails - I got the Radcliffe, which was sweet and fruity with a nice hint of vanilla, my boyfriend got the Sidecar, which was so alcoholic he couldn't drink it. Our waiter graciously took it back, and suggested the Jackie O (a fruity champagne cocktail), which was much more to his liking. For appetizers, we got the spiced skirt steak with a salad of mesclun, beets and avocado, and the shrimp scampi salad. These were both fantastic dishes - the steak was medium rare and very flavorful (and a good-sized portion), and the salad was a nice accompaniment. We fought over who got to finish the scampi - 6 large shrimp in a delicipous buttery sauce with a pile of baby greens. I got the wild mushroom tortelli for my entree, as well as a glass of Sauvignon blanc recommended by our server that was just perfect. The dish was a little smaller than I expected - 5 or 6 handmade tortelli with mushroom filling, in a savory mushroom broth. The other entree was a braised port ragout over papardelle (I don't see this on the online menu), which was some extremely tender pork over wide, soft noodles. I liked this a bit better than the tortelli. Both dishes were tasty comfort food, but we didn't find them quite as exciting as the appetizers. For dessert I got the lemon custard cake, which was served with a little drizzle of berry sauce and a generous dollop of whipped cream. I enjoy tart flavors, so I really liked this dish.

All in all, it was a very enjoyable meal - I’ll be craving that scampi salad! Our server was excellent, as well - he really knew the menu, and took the time with me to find a wine that I’d like and that would work well with my entree. I’m looking forward to trying the afternoon tea that they’ve just started up. If anyone’s been, I’d love a report...
